iSCSI Hyper-V performance

Hi all, Any guidance or opinions are greatly appreciated. I am currently planning out a virtualization migration plan for a customer. I'm using top of the line everything in the hardware but I'm a bit concerned about disk throughput with the iSCSI SAN. How should I benchmark (ahead of purchase!) if ...

Re: iSCSI vs Native

Only those two Hyper-V servers will be able to connect to HA devices. Ah. I installed the demo of "Native" on my W7 workstation. I then was able to connect to an iSCSI target on the W7 PC via a W2K8 cluster node. I didn't go any further than that but you can see how that confused me! At t...

iSCSI vs Native

Hi all, First off, if there is already a post/thread about this I apologize in advance but I didn't find it. Can someone tell me what the limitations of Native SAN for Hyper-V vs the full blown iSCSI SAN version are ? I installed the Native in demo mode and it looks pretty much identical to me. What...

Bizarre iSCSI problem solved

Hi guys, This is just a post to showcase how a simple problem which caused big problems was solved by accident. I was thrilled and had a "hand in face" moment once I figured it out. For quite a while (a year or so?) I've been running Starwind free for a W2K8 R2 Hyper-V clustering solution....

Re: Disk defrag?

Thanks for the answer. I wrote my question in a hurry. When CSV's are enabled, the mount point is listed as c:\clusterstorage\volume*. If I install diskeeper or perfectdisk and tell it to defrag c: will it attempt to defrag the CSV's as well? I would think not but it's worth asking. Also, if the Sta...

Disk defrag?

Hi all, Any comment regarding disk defragmentation tips? I'd like to install server defrag software. Should live Starwind iscsi targets be included in defrag routines? I'm using Starwind Free in Windows 2008 R2 Enterprise as CSV's so the iSCSI targets are not shown as drives. Any advice would apprec...

Re: Starwind HA demo

Thanks for the reply. I'm demoing 5.4. RAID 10 primary, RAID5 on secondary. Drives are 1tb 7200rpm SATA enterprise models. Therefore, I should try to make the sync network as fast as possible between the two Starwind partners. I haven't tinkered with the TCP/IP or Ethernet settings yet. I suppose tha...

Starwind HA demo

Hi all, I've been demoing Starwind HA in the "lab" in order to be better able to pitch it to my clients. I ran into a problem today while simulating an iSCSI network failure. Here's what I have: 2 dual quad core servers running W2K8 Enterprise R2 cluster node1 runs starwind ha (primary) cl...

Re: HA Sync Performance

Interesting idea there. Use a crossover cable to eliminate the switch? However, HP and Dell comprise the overwhelming majority of the world's servers. Claiming that HP, Dell, Broadcom and Intel all have it wrong is hard to swallow. I can't imagine any enterprise IT department having much confidence ...

Re: Need help deciding between starwind and equallogic

I can't really add much regarding the IOPS calculations and so forth but I can add my thoughts on your server setup. I've been selling/configuring servers for over fifteen years. The whitebox servers you created are certainly excellent machines from a technical standpoint. And they might work perfec...

Re: One large iSCSI target or multiple small ones?

Yeah, I was somewhat hesitant to do post it in the same thread as it's probably not related, the more I think about it. All the evidence I have is that the Starwind service crashes. That's it. Nothing else in the system log, application log, or any other Windows logging. Of course, when the Starwind...

One large iSCSI target or multiple small ones?

Has anyone encountered stability problems with large LUN's? I have a 800GB img being used for Hyper-V clustering (only 2 VM's during testing.) Server is a W2K8R2 EE on a new Intel brand server running hardware RAID 10 of 4 1TB enterprise drives. For me, the Starwind service crashes once every few da...

Starwind service crash

Hello, Currently I'm running the demo (unlicensed) version of Starwind Enterprise iSCSI Target. On 9/24 my iSCSI service crashed and created a mini-dump. Seeing that the dump file is 54 MB, I wanted to contact StarWind before sending such a large file via email. The plan, as it is, is to purchase th...
