Re: rebuilding starwind SAN

Hi, thanks for the reply. Yes, i think upgrading would be a good idea too :-) I am not using Starwind in an HA configuration. It is just one physical box at the moment. I just need to basically move all the img files off the server, wipe it and rebuild the server from scratch then copy the img files...

rebuilding starwind SAN

Hi, I am going through the process of coming up with a plan to move my starwind server over to RAID50 from RAID10 and unfortunately my RAID card wont allow me to do this on the fly so I am going to have to reinstall windows and Starwind (I am on version 5.8). I have 4ximg files (all quite big) and I...

Space used on LUN in VMWare

Dear Starwind Team, I have a quickk question about SAN luns in a vmware vsphere environment. The reason I ask is because I have an issue with my Dell Equallogic with a particular issue and wondered if the same applies to Starwind. Basically it all centres around free/used space on a VMFS volume. If ...

Re: Fixed path faster than round robin

Ok guys, well I finally got to the bottom of it. I will post the resolution in case anyone else out there has issues with nortel/avaya switches... The nortel/avaya switches buffers are linked to each group of 12 ports. By default each port is only allowed to use up to 33% of the buffer. This has to ...

Re: Fixed path faster than round robin

Right,

issue is to do with our Avaya/nortel switches. 10k's worth of switches in a stack and a netgear out performs it!

I am looking in to this issue now.

thanks,

Paul

Re: Fixed path faster than round robin

Hi, Saw your message on my post on the vmware forums. I am still investigating but essentially I seem to be getting somewhere now. I have built a new ESXi5 server, set up round robin and linked it to the starwind SAN. I have moved this set up off my Avaya switches and done some performance testing u...

Re: Fixed path faster than round robin

just a quick update: I have not tried the direct connection yet as I have some vm's in use on the equallogic. But.... I have stopped starwind and installed the microsoft iscsi target and tested that out. Still no better so this is def not a software san issue. I updated the onboard broadcom nics and...

Re: Fixed path faster than round robin

Hiya, What I mean is: In round robin I see about 10-30% network utilization on each nic on the starwind server (iometer shows 40-60mbps on sequnetial read) in fixed path using one link I see 90%+ (110mbps on sequential read in iometer) I have spent a lot of time on this, messing around with the inte...

Re: Fixed path faster than round robin

well, one thing that was an issue was that I was using a broadcom nic on the ESXi host for one of my vmknics on the iscsi switch doh! (this may/may not have been a problem) I rebuilt it correctly now so that all the nics on both the starwind server and ESXi are using the intel nics. I am still getti...

Re: Fixed path faster than round robin

Hi again, I tested out both links seperately on fixed and they are both fine. Its very strange. When i use round robin if I used the default path policy in VMware with 1000 iops I see around 108mbps across both links. If I change the policy to 1,2,5,10 iops it drops to around 40mbps. I have followed...

Re: Fixed path faster than round robin

Hi Paul, Could you please tell me what were the tests you performed in IOmeter: writes, reads, or both? Which of them shows the degradation if MPIO is enabled? Also, have you already disabled the delayed ACKs? Hi Max, The iometer tests I used were from the unofficial storage performance thread on v...
