Re: Virtualized Domain Controller best practices

I think for a second domain controller I am going to try running one under Hyper V at a workstation. Zentyal 4.2 has great potential, because it has a built in role for Active Directory as both a primary and secondary domain controller. Linux would provide a lower profile and less cost than a second...

Re: Access to Shared Storage VIA IP Address

Thanks, I probably would have tried that last. But aren't there stability issues essentially sharing Iscsi volumes?

Re: Network Connections for Microsoft CSV...

I am more specifically looking at data volume requirements of MS CSV communitcations. I had 2 extra 1gb ports so I teamed them for Cluster communications. But I don't know if this is overkill, or I can just use the main LAN. How much data goes along this path in Starwind scenario? Not much I assume.

Re: Virtualized Domain Controller best practices

Thanks, and I agree. but in a 2x2 cluster, storage and computer separate, promoting a storage server to secondary domain controller (or both really) is frowned upon by Microsoft, they really don't like domain controllers clustered. And in disaster testing I learned first hand the need for a second d...

LSFS vs LSFS with dedpup vs Flat File System

I am intrigued by LSFS, but want more details on when to use each of the 3 file options you offer, LSFS, LSFS w/Dedupe, and FLAT. I am guessing (but I couldn't find documentation) that LSFS w/Dedup shouldn't be used for Boot OS VM Volumes? (this is just based of MS best practices for HyperV). So is ...

Virtualized Domain Controller best practices

What are best practices re: the Domain Controller and Starwind (Storage and Compute separate 2x2 node cluster). SInce the loss of a domain controller can cause a loss of storage connectivity, and MS Best Practices require the domain controller to be virtual (which also makes it vulnerable if the sto...

10gbe direct connect with 1gb as "fail over"

I configured my iSCSI connections per the instructions on my test 2 node SW-VSAN storage cluster, and I am using 1x 10gbe Direct connect cable (Mellanox Directx-2) for iSCSI. I want to use extra 1gb connections as a "fail over" of sorts, if this is possible. in the MPIO connections I have ...

Network Connections for Microsoft CSV...

I had set up my Starwind VSAN in 2 node storage cluster per instructions, and it (seems to be) working fine. However in set up I was thrown a tiny bit because Microsoft Fail Over Cluster Manager wanted its own CSV network connection, and this wasn't mentioned in the directions. I added 2 direct conn...

Access to Shared Storage VIA IP Address

New to Clustering, but my test system is (finally) up and running with Starwind VSAN on 2 node Win2012 R2 Cluster. I will have resources that need an IP address to connect to VSAN storage, as they cannot be joined to the domain or have limited configuration fields. What is the best way to make VSAN ...

Best Volume/Partition Allocation for Hyper-V

I have not fired up my VSAN yet, trying to get some questions out of the way. Is it better to create a Virtual VSAN disk in Starwind for each Hyper-V virtual machine (and place each disk on its own hardware partition or volume? Or is the system resilient enough to pool Hyper-V virtual hard drives on...

LAN set up with a 2 node Storage Cluster

Pre-Installation questions: I have 2 DL380's as intended VSAN storage, both running Win Server 2012 R2. I have a total of 8x Broadcom 1gb LANS on each box. each server has 1 SAS RAID 10 array, 1 SATA Raid 10 array, and an attached SATA array in Raid 6. I have 2 Layer 2 switches, 48 port, and a under...

2 Node Storage Cluster with Domain Controller

Pre-Installation questions (after a few months on other projects...) I have 2 DL380's as intended VSAN storage, both running Win Server 2012 R2. It says on one product sheet that neither of these servers should be the domain controller. I had intended to run Client Computer Backups directly to one o...
