- kali conversion error-bios screen 30aug22.jpg (37.59 KiB) Viewed 3770 times
Hi There,
I have successfully converted a working Kali Linux vm from Hyper-V to ESXi-6.5.0-20180502001-standard but when i boot into it in ESXi it stays on the BIOS screen and wont boot into the OS. Ive also tried creating a new machine by converting the disk only but I get the same result. I'm using the converter version 9.0.1.268. Just a few months ago I did the same conversion and it worked without an issue, whats changed?

Hi There,
The setting was already set to EFI boot. I tried converting just the hard disk too but everything I tried didnt work except.......
Issue resolved, recreated the kali vm as a gen 1 vm in hyper-v and the conversion to esxi server was successful. There is something about the gen 2 hyper-v vm the conversion breaks the hard disk or the boot file or something for kali but no time to spend on troubleshooting it work tbh. Maybe this could be used as a test case for the converter? Either way there is nothing wrong with it persay, I will continue to use it, it saves a lot of faffing around using other tools.
Thanks for your suggestions though.
All the best

I believe it is normal for Linux VMs to boot as GEN1 VMs. I believe it to be related rather to a VM than to the V2V Converter.
