Is it 100% necessary for servers used for HA to be fully identical? Can I use an AMD server and an Intel server from different generations for HA? One server is a dual quad AMD form 3 years ago while the other is a dual quad Intel from last year. Both will run Windows 2012.

Thanks

No we basically don't care. It's a good idea for your machines to have comparable performance to avoid cluster slow down because one node will respond with a delay.
