Windows 2008R2 update to Windows 2012R2?

I currently use StarWind free version 5.8.2013 in a Windows 2008 R2 server with an Areca 18xx.
I would like to upgrade to Windows 2012R2 and wonder what the correct process is?

Do I need to upgrade to latest version first, then upgrade OS?

It depends, but in most of cases - yes, it is better to update the SAN software first.
Can I ask you what device types of starwind san are you running?
