How does MSCS notify Starwinds when Primary node crashes?

With the active/passive aspect of MSCS, how does Starwind know when to allow the passive node to preempt the ownership? Excuse my MSCS noob question. -Scott

The target is shared with clustering option enabled. When active node fails the passive one starts to work and connects starwind targets.
