quick background:
2 node ha on V6 running 2008 R2 Standard with 32gb ram (hit the limit on the ram)
i want to upgrade in place (1 node at a time) to 2012 or 2012 r2 to use more ram, from 32gb to 64gb
is there a major benefit (performance, reliability, networking platform, mpio, etc...from starwind's testing/experience) to go 2012 r2 or just use 2012?

R2 seems to be a fixed version of a non-R2 so I'd suggest you to upgrade directly to R2. We did not find any R2 specific issues.
