Killer offer for VMware users, who understand?

Hello,

do anyone understand this offer http://www.starwindsoftware.com/starwin ... ainbanner"?
A 2-node FREE version of StarWind Virtual SAN™. It installs on top of the existing two FREE or licensed vSphere hosts, clustering them and creating a virtual SAN by “mirroring” DAS. The FREE version of StarWind Virtual SAN™ features unlimited capacity and runs on a minimal (just 2 hosts) hardware profile without being tied to any brand.
I can't imagine how to do it with FREE version of Starwind Virtual SAN and FREE vSphere hosts (I suppose FREE ESXi hypervisors are meant). Free version of Starwind software is limited in maximum size of HA storage and free ESXi hypervisor can't be "clustered" IMHO. How to "mirroring DAS" in this configuration?

Thank you.

Hi,
Actually StarWind Virtual SAN for vSphere comes with no HA capacity limitations.
It's an unlimited 2-node license which you can use either with free or with a commercial vSphere installation.
Please feel free to contact me should you have any questions.

Hmm, interesting... but my Starwind 2-node cluster has these parameters:
  • license type: free edition
    multinode device capacity: 128 GB
    version: 8.0 build 7145
When I go to Cluster - Devices and try to create for example 500 GB HA device, I get error: "Storage creation failed. Failed: operation cannot be completed."

What's wrong? Bad license file?

Thank you.

That may be the wrong license file.
Is there any chance you could send it to support@starwindsoftware.com mentioning this forum thread?

Free ESXi cannot be "clustered" indeed (vMotion is not licensed and so on) but...

1) Nobody stops you from building guest VM clusters with SQL Server, Exchange and other mission-critical apps hosted by stand-alone free ESXi hosts

2) Nobody stops you from running commercial vSphere (Essentials, Essentials+ and up) using StarWind Virtual SAN to feed shared storage to cluster

So there's a way out of the box ;)
