It appears i need to upgrade my SW from my rock solid 5.8 to 8.x, to allow on the fly HA disk expansion.
I need advice on the following:
1. Can I go from 5.8 direct to 8.x?
2. What happens license wise, I'm coming from a paid 5.8 license. (I did have an option while on support for 6.x, but we choose not to upgrade due 5.8 just working)
3. What's the process to upgrade from 5.8 to 8.x?
4. Will my current 5.8 HA devices be recognized by 8.x, or is there some type of conversion / upgrade of the devices?
'
Setup:
1. Hyper-V 2008 R2 (Core)
2. Hyper-V 2008 R2 (Gui)
3. SW 5.8
Thanks!
V

I had similar questions during my upgrade a while ago and was pointed to this guide
http://knowledgebase.starwindsoftware.c ... d-version/.
It should answer your questions i hope.
Anyways, since you've got a really old one, i believe it is not so easy to perform an upgrade in your case.

Yes i have a few questions.
1. When I move from SW 5.8 to 8.7, if i want to upgrade what actually happens during the data migration?
a. My current SW IMG is 1.5TB, Is this migration an automated process, do i need enough space on the disk for a migration or conversion?
Per SW documentation: Data migration – the update requires taking steps of the standard update and moving the data from the client side from existing devices to the new ones, created using the updated version
2. Confirming I can go direct from 5.8 to 8.7 per the link Darklight included earlier?
3. Say if I decide to upgrade one of my nodes from W2K8R2(core) to W2K8R2(gui) I assume it would be drop a node from cluster?
a. Rebuild server to W2K8R2(core)
b. Re-install SW 8.7 sync both nodes.
c. Rejoin W2KR28 cluster.
4. SW 8.7 tuning document, I know with 5.8 we needed to edit SW conf file to add jumbo frame support, is this still required with 8.7?
a. Or does 8.7 auto-tune, if not where is the tuning 8.7 document (link) located.
Thanks

Hi,
1-2. Data migration is the process of manual data movement from old images to the new. Therefore, you can't just install the latest build on top of 5.8. Or you can try to use the old image by following this article
https://knowledgebase.starwindsoftware. ... age-files/ Basically, it gives insight what should be changed to get old images working with the latest build. But note, that 5.8 should be deleted completely and v8 should be installed on a server without v5.8 on it.
3. I can confirm those steps. But you can actually save StarWind.cfg file and all images you have and then just replace new StarWind.cfg file with the old one and fast sync should be performed. The following article might be helpful as well
https://knowledgebase.starwindsoftware. ... d-servers/
4. The latest StarWind build does not require any tuning. Jumbo frames are supported by default.
I hope it makes sense.
