I have used Starwind Virtual San version 6 software now for about two years. It has worked great. I have a two node hyper-v cluster. I have three HA disk. A few days ago i was given the shock of my life when my outage alarms started blaring. I logged into my host machines to see what was wrong. All drives seemed to be intact, raid controller had no errors but i realized that one of my cluster disks were offline. I checked the iSCSI Initiator and it said waiting for connection on one of the connections. Opened up StarWind Management Console to realized that one disk was suddenly set to not synced. I restarted one of the servers and it began a full sync automatically which subsequently took about 4hrs to complete.

didn't know this could happen, so i am now paranoid :)

1. What could have caused this? It has been a week since this happened and so far so good.
2. Do you all recommend having multiple smaller disk lets say 1 - 2tb instead of a larger 5tb disk?
3. Is there a way to reduce the size of a HA disk? I know i can expand but I am curious about reduction
4. On one of the servers, i realized the modification date on the .img file has NOT changed since the last time i expanded the disk, but on the other server the modification date on the file seems to be quite recent even though all seems to be synced up and is working. Is this something i should be worried about?

PS. Though the disk said not synced all connections had the little green check marks :). My configuration includes two gigabit nics per machine dedicated to starwind connected via cat6 cross over cables.

1. It could occur due to different reasons, malfunction or software issues, etc. One of the most common reason may be isAlive function performing. You can try to check Windows App event logs - there should be plenty of info to analyze. Here is Starwind KB article, explaining why full sync could happen: https://knowledgebase.starwindsoftware. ... may-start/
2. On my experience, creation of one big device may cause inconveniences in administration. Larger device = less flexibility :)
3. Unfortunately, it is impossible. Once extended - it can't be shrunk.
4. I've noticed some illogical "date modified" behavior myself as well, but never experienced any issues with that.
