Adding or increasing L1 cache is very easy from the GUI now.

Any hint or tip?

Yes, the linked KB article is still the supported way to perform adding/removing L2 cache.
As for L1, indeed, it can be easily done from GUI now, although if anyone prefers the old-school way, it is still an option.

Should I add the L2 cache to the first replication partner without stopping replication?

You cannot add caching without stopping the service.
