Can't create storage pool with more than 1 disk on each host

Hi there, I am very new to Starwind VSAN so please forgive my ignorance especially if this is an easy question. I am trying to create a storage pool on my two node cluster but am having issues adding more than 1 drive per host. My setup is ESXI managed via vSphere with raid controller on each host passed through to the VM on each host.

I can see all the drives appear in the web interface but cannot seem to add more than 1 drive from each for the life of me. The particular error I am getting is "This disk has a different media or bus type, size or is attached to a different storage controller" I tried looking through documentation as well as the forum but could not see anything regarding this. All of the disks on each host are connected to the corresponding raid controller on each host and they are all the same size and model of drive so I know there is no difference there.

Welcome to StarWind Forum!
Is there any way to create the RAID on your controller?
If you plan the setup for commercial use, please consider trialing the product https://www.starwindsoftware.com/free-s ... vsan-trial

Hi there, thanks for the reply. I thought it was best to not have the raid controller do raid but rather to pass all the disks through to the VM itself? Also no this is not for commercial use so I am pretty sure I am limited to the software I have.

Is there a reason why passing the raid controller thru to the VM makes it so I can't select more than one disk?

Hi,

Unless they are NVMes, please do the hardware RAID first.

Hi there I setup the raid following the guides on the website as RAID 10 and such but now when I try to create a volume I am able to select the RAID 10 on each of the hosts and it fails to create the volume with nothing other than an error that says "Failed"

Hi,

1. Please restart the VM.
2. Make sure it picks only one disk per VM.
3. Use that disk to create the volume.

Hi there, I have done what was suggested earlier. I created a RAID 10 configuration with all of my HDD on the system in the onboard RAID controller and then passed the RAID controller thru to the VM and thats when I get the error as show above.

Thanks for your update.
Can you try wiping the disk before creating the volume?
If that does not help, please collect the logs for each VM (press the gear-shaped button -> General -> Expand the node name -> Support bundle). Share them here with me.

I am unable to wipe the disks though the UI, see screenshot below as well as logs here https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/ ... sp=sharing.

Thanks. If there is no data, can you please delete the pool and wipe the disk?

Deleted the pool and the wipe disk option under physical disks section is still grayed out.

Hi,

try running sudo wipefs --all /dev/sdb in SSH.

Same thing, ran the command on each node and it succeeded without error but when trying to configure a volume I am still having the issue with it failing with no information.

Sorry for the delay.
The issue is going to be fixed in the future build. For now, Please try restarting the VM and creating a volume with a unique name.
