Linux actually has better network and storage stack (OK, from the performance point of view, I know a lot about internal design of both and NT architecture is definitely a winner). So StarWind running on the top of the Linux box actually shows 20-30% better results (mostly latency and I/O load) compared to the NT version USING THE SAME HARDWARE.
Did I miss something, is there a linux version of Starwind?

VSA = Virtual Storage Appliance. Linux-based ESX/ESXi, Hyper-V and Xen pre-configured image you upload to your hypervisor and run to have stand-alone iSCSI target.
For OEM you can check Wiki:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Original_e ... nufacturer
In our case it's Linux-based flash USB dongle, CD or IDE flash disk with pre-loaded StarWind OEMs can put into their servers to have fully-functional iSCSI SAN solution.
Both versions are in pre-beta stage so we'll release them before summer 2010.

I was talking about Openfiler on Linux compared to Starwind on Windows, on exactly the same hardware each time, I don't know a lot about Linux vs. Windows storage and network stacks so I'll take your word for it. Would suggest to me that Openfiler was the problem then, because it was definitely a lot slower than Starwind.
